It is critical for our students to see themselves in the literature we read and the lives we study. It is also imperative that we learn about the people who have shaped this nation beyond the white, male, hegemony. So, we are building a collection of biographies about Americans of all races and genders, life experiences, interests, talents, professions, backgrounds, and cultures. My hope is that these biographies inspire our learners to see the possibilities for using their own strengths, gifts and talents. They also provide an opportunity for kids to appreciate the importance of life stories and perspectives that differ from their own. I've selected biographies of musicians, entertainers, thinkers, inventors, athletes, politicians, artists, scientists and activists so students can see the wide variety of ways to be a leader and contribute to our world.
