Lessons in my polynomial unit are done completely by discovery. We supply a polynomial equation then ask students to graph it and determine from the graph intercepts, critical points, etc. Finally, they try to determine the patterns that emerge in order to establish the rules of polynomials. Graphing by hand is time consuming and frustrating. Giving these students the tool to graph an equation for them instantly allows them to focus on the important part of the lesson: learning the patterns of polynomials. They can zoom in, out, find critical points using the special tools, and in general have fun with the graph instead of hating the arduous task of graphing by hand.
