Part of my reading curriculum involves students reading a book of their choice. Each student is required to read 15 pages per day and we have SSR time every day in class. Students begin each reading class by writing in a journal about the book they are reading. This is a paragraph that begins with their opinion on something they read. It can be anything. The opinion is followed by an explanation of why they think the way they do, and then they must support that opinion with specific details and examples from the book. Each Friday they are given a writing prompt of two or three questions that deal with different aspects of literature. These questions deal with conflict, point of view, etc. Each student writes about the novel they have chosen to read so they are all writing about something different. This makes having a wide selection of books that the students want to read essential. If I can keep them engaged in their reading, then it is much easier to get them to write about what they are reading.
