Students are most inspired to read when they are able to relate to a text. My classroom is getting more and more diverse every year, and I struggle to keep up with purchasing books that my students can relate to. Having a diverse library, which includes characters from other cultures and backgrounds, helps students connect with their reading on a different level. My goal is to have a library that allows my students to see themselves and each other in print. My students are allowed to read real novels that help them understand who they are, where they come from and why they may see the world differently than their peers. My main goal with this request is to gain a library with more "windows" and "mirrors." The windows allow all students to gain entry to other cultures and learn about them. The mirrors allow my students to see themselves in the texts they are reading. These sixteen multicultural, diverse books are exactly what my students need.
