This past semester, ninth graders at Brewer High School in White Settlement ISD read the novel, "Speak" by Laurie Halse Anderson with their English classes. For many students, it was the first novel they had ever completed or enjoyed. This book was unlike any other these students have read in a school setting; though published in 1999, its subject matter was relatable and accessible to teens today. The book lended itself to high-interest discussion topics that kept students engaged and eager to continue reading. Many students entered high school claiming to dislike reading, but many of these same students were caught trying to read ahead! We would love to continue this energy into the spring semester by teaching another high-interest novel written with teens of today in mind. We have our hearts set on "The Hate U Give" by Angie Thomas. We are hoping to each acquire a class set for each freshman English teacher. This reading initiative will benefit many students year after year, as we plan on teaching these same novels for as long as they prove relevant and of interest to our students at Brewer High.
