I am hoping to build a math activity center for my classroom where students can use fun and challenging games to build their mathematical problem-solving skills and collaboration skills. These games and activities are chosen from the concepts that have been shown to be the most challenging for students. Including games in centers and rotations helps students to practice the skills. I want to make learning fun and engaging for students and have found students look forward to days when we have math games. Applying the integer rules is one area where my 7th graders struggle every year. I chose the integer games to be able to include fun activities that help them practice without a paper/pencil task. I have observed a classroom where the 24 cards were used and students had fun coming up with different ways to get to 24. The students were having fun while applying the order of operation rules and the communication was rich. I included this card game because it is a good way to encourage collaboration and practice this skill. The exponent game is going to be used with my 8th-grade class. The 8th graders struggle to remember the appropriate rule for exponents. This game will help them to practice their skills and encourage the collaboration and communication of math ideas while they are playing. All these games and activities are chosen to promote mathematical thinking and processes . I hope that including them in the math rotations will help students become successful and build their mathematical thinking and problem-solving skills.
