After reading and hearing blog posts and videos by Adam Dovico, an elementary school principal, public speaker, trainer, and author about Brain Bins, I was motivated to change the way I start the day in my classroom. Brain Bins are tubs filled with hands-on manipulatives that allow students to create, think, and collaborate. Instead of the traditional morning work, Brain Bins would be used as our morning work for the first ten minutes. Access to Brain Bins in the classroom would allow my students to be involved in activities that involve important 21st-century skills such as collaboration, strategy, creativity, problem-solving, and critical thinking to start each day. I believe that offering my students a chance to begin their day with an activity of their choice will be beneficial. It will allow students to work together and build relationships. This will set the classroom up for a positive and successful day. Mr. Dovico instituted Brain Bins in his school and reported that attendance and behavior improved. When students are excited about school they want to be there! I am requesting manipulatives such as Picasso Tiles, Crystal Climbers, Tangrams, and Zoobs to excite my students about the upcoming day. By providing Brain Bins to my students, I will be accomplishing many goals. The students will be participating in must-have 21st-century skills, creating relationships and a strong classroom culture, and lastly building excitement about school to improve attendance.
