Students are pleasantly surprised when they give a book a chance, that they do like it and enjoy reading. The Schwa was Here is a novel that we read as a class and utilize to work on vocabulary skills, figurative language skills, cultural awareness, and writing skills. Participation is higher when students are engaged and can relate to content. The characters in the novel are in eighth grade, which is close to my student's age. It is realistic fiction and touches on coming-of-age themes and topics. Student achievement will be greater because of their ability to relate to the content, engagement, and participation. Cultural awareness is also a part of the content as the book is set in Brooklyn, New York. Some of the main characters are Italian, some are Catholic, and some are Jewish. Religious and cultural customs are touched on as they are a part of the main character's lives. Brooklyn, New York is very different than where my student's live and exposes them to different ways of life.
