There are currently 84 students at my elementary school with an active IEP, and several more children in various stages of being identified as students in need of services. After a 4 year fight, we now have a space, and as of 1/16/2020, the space set aside for this project has been cleared out. This will be a space open to all our students and set up for engagement in therapeutically structured activities to promote the use of large muscle groups and sensory regulation techniques. We have scraped together a mini trampoline, spinner disk, and a balance board. What our students really need is a crash pad and mats to cover a few feet of cinderblock walls surrounding it. By having the crashpad set up in a safe way, our students can jump, slam, bounce, and get the necessary feedback they crave, so that they can then focus on their classwork and demonstrate on-task behaviors. This room will serve children as young as 3 and as old as 13. To make this space fit the large age-gap, we must have something to offer our intermediate students as well. The addition of a sensorimotor room will be a game-changer for our students. By supporting this project, you will be directly helping our students to take a giant step towards addressing the physical, mental, and behavioral issues which block academic progress and can negatively impact the classroom and our overall school environment. Students will have scheduled opportunities throughout the day to use the sensory room. This will guarantee them an opportunity to overcome cognitive, physical, and behavioral hurdles that negatively impact their ability to learn and impede the learning of others. A safe space. A space to hope. A space to cope.
