Our school's 50-50, two-way dual language program model means that some our students' first language was English, while the others' was Spanish. These groups of students are combined into heterogeneous classes, which spend 50% of their time in an Spanish classroom and the other 50% in an English classroom. The students in my Spanish classroom, therefore, possess an extremely wide range of language skills. While many of the students in our classroom are fully bilingual and biliterate, others have just begun to learn Spanish in the last year or two. Reading, writing, and speaking in Spanish, therefore, is an exciting challenge for our class. Visual and word-to-word Spanish-English dictionaries will be extremely useful for all of my students, but especially for those who are still in the early stages of Spanish language development. My hope is that their independence and confidence with the language grows as they learn how to use these valuable tools.
