During the spring term, my class will be extending our Marine Science unit into Social Studies by studying the history of our wonderful state by examining the story told by our state’s collection of public lighthouses. Our culminating field trip will take us to the beautiful Oregon Coast, where we will have a chance to explore the Yaquina Head Lighthouse and its history: Guided by rangers dressed in periodic costumes, students will tour the lighthouse, as well as learn about a day in the life of the lighthouse keeper and his family. Students get to climb stairs of the 93 ft. tall tower to view a working Fresnel lens and examine questions such as how difficult it was to provide fresh food for a family in a remote coastal location such as Yaquina Head. While we live only a little over an hour away from the coast, many of my students have never had a chance to visit and tour any of Oregon's nine publicly owned lighthouses. This field trip not only provides an amazing learning opportunity for all of my students but also allows us to build community through a hands-on learning experience. Furthermore, this experience helps us "shine a light on Oregon's history", and it will also help create a memory that my students will treasure for many years to come. This amazing learning-experience is provided to schools at no cost through the generosity of the Bureau of Land Management. However, transportation has to be funded by the school/community.
