I'm a new teacher in need of standard preschool classroom materials. Many of the families are low income and the children are at risk and delayed. Easels, blocks, sensory tables, and comfortable seating are key to improving all domains, especially language and literacy. Children need to develop certain perceptual motor skills in order to write. To develop the skills needed for writing, I need to provide a wide range of materials and opportunities to practice and improve hand-eye coordination. Sensory play appeals to a variety of learning styles and engages children in literacy experiences in unique ways. Children learn new information best while participating in a variety of planned experiences including opportunities to create during aesthetic play. Hands-on aesthetic experiences makes learning more memorable and helps children to link ideas and concepts in a meaningful way. Blocks provide opportunities for children to practice skills and engage in learning across multiple domains. Blocks require physical skills as children coordinate movements of large and small muscles; cognitive skills as children experiment with the concept of cause and effect; and social/emotional skills in order to play productively with peers. Providing a comfortable and cozy area for the children to read helps build the desire to read. Having these materials will help build a strong foundation for my children. Research and experience proves that children given the developmental environment I advocate for incur fewer health problems and costs, perform better in school, experience fewer and less severe mental health problems, perpetrate less crime, and attain higher socioeconomic status later in life.
