Memorizing math facts has a purpose, but so do calculators. By middle school, students should have memorized their math facts, however, this is not always the case. Students that have yet to master their math facts, are still able to learn advanced mathematical concepts. They just need a tool to help...a calculator! To become a more advanced mathematical thinker, students need confidence. To keep/gain more mathematical confidence students need practice, and practice takes time! Calculators help students with the time piece. Not only are they a tool to help students arrive to their answer quicker, but they make students feel more confident regardless of their proficiency with their math facts.
