My middle school students are creative, resilient, and deeply curious about the world around them. They also face a variety of unique challenges that come with being in special education. Middle school history covers massive concepts, complex timelines, and heavy reading materials. For my students, traditional textbooks and standard lectures are an overwhelming barrier to learning. Despite these hurdles, they come to class eager to explore how the past shapes our future—they just need the right tools to access that knowledge. I am launching this project to teach history using a variety of tools and techniques. By introducing adaptive tech tools to our classroom, we can bridge the gap between texts and my students' diverse learning styles. We are requesting specialized tablets and audio-assistive tools that will allow text-to-speech features for struggling readers.
