As a school, we educate and develop the whole-learner. We help our students grow academically, socially, and emotionally. Please help give my students a sensory room where they can go to self-regulate, calm themselves, and cope with sensory overload and emotional dysregulation. While this room is geared to support students with special needs all students within the school would have access to it. A sensory room is a therapeutic space with a variety of equipment to develop a child's senses through special lighting, music, and objects. Items in this project will provide students opportunities to develop and understand their senses of touch, smell, sight, and sound in addition to body awareness and spatial orientation. Swings, tunnels, tents with fiberoptic lighting, weighted blankets, noise-reducing headphones, and lavender-scented stuffed animals that can be heated or chilled are among a few items that will find a home in the sensory room. Students will have scheduled opportunities throughout the day to use the sensory room. Meanwhile, when students are emotionally dysregulated, experiencing fight, flight, or freeze responses, or in crisis, they will have a safe space within the school that provides privacy to cope and calm themselves through a number of supports. A sensory room will enhance the lives of not just students with special needs but all the students in our school.
