I had been keeping all of the books aside as the packages came in and last week the final part of the Donors Choose order arrived! I created a scavenger hunt for students to complete with clues hidden all over the school and the playground. Each clue introduced a new book series, there were 18 different book series to introduce the kids to. At the end of the scavenger hunt, that took almost an hour, students returned to the classroom to see the prize which was all of the books spread out on tables for the kids to see. The kids were so excited!\r\n\r\nWe spent a lot of the day reading out new books. Some kids were drawn to the scary Mister Shivers series. Other kids loved the funny Hedgehog and Dragon series. It was awesome to have books that were of interest to each student. Kids even helped me organize the books by creating labels for them in our class library. I am so glad to be able to end the school year with a boost of excitement for reading. I noticed how happy kids were to be able to confidently read most of the new books by themselves!\r\n\r\nThank you all so much for your support!","fullyFundedDate":1778279660893,"projectUrl":"project/building-confident-readers-with-scholast/10235701/","projectTitle":"Building Confident Readers with Scholastic Acorn Books","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Walton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4884051_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1507663847958","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/4884051"},{"teacherId":10160815,"projectId":9550970,"letterContent":"It is with immense gratitude and excitement that I write to you on behalf of both my students and myself. If it truly takes a village to raise a child, then it must take a universe to educate a classroom full of children. Thank you for being an important part of our universe. Your generous donations have provided my students with the tools and resources they need to succeed in the classroom. From the lap desks to the books, every item gifted through this incredible program has been put to meaningful use.\r\n\r\nOne of the greatest impacts of this project was putting books back into students' hands, especially for research purposes. I wanted my students to strengthen their understanding of text features and how they support comprehension—how a table of contents helps locate information, or how a glossary can clarify unfamiliar vocabulary. These are essential literacy skills that can easily be overlooked when research happens exclusively online. Using the endangered species texts gave students valuable opportunities to practice these skills in an engaging and authentic way.\r\n\r\nAnother favorite among my students was the Oregon Trail: Choose Your Own Trail series. Before reading, we explored the historical events leading up to the Oregon Trail, and then students embarked on the journey as if they were pioneers in the 1850s. These books are written in second person point of view, which students do not encounter often, making them a unique and valuable learning experience. The interactive format also encouraged participation and focus during read-alouds, as students eagerly debated choices and worked together to survive the journey. Along the way, we dodged dysentery, recovered from cholera, collaborated with Native Americans, and avoided dangers like buffalo stampedes and forest fires. This series quickly became one students constantly begged to continue reading—and as a reading teacher, there is no better outcome than that.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity and support. Because of you, my students are not only growing as readers, but also developing a genuine love of books and learning.","fullyFundedDate":1764649183086,"projectUrl":"project/books-matter/9550970/","projectTitle":"Books Matter!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Wheelock","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10160815"},{"teacherId":4884051,"projectId":9233989,"letterContent":"My students are absolutely loving the new Mo Willems books that we have in our classroom. The Unlimited Squirrels series is such a hit! They are filled with humor, as well as with real informational facts. We started the year by reading all of the books from that series, and now my students enjoy reading them during independent reading time. \r\n\r\nThere are some students who are reluctant readers in my classroom, but they really enjoy reading books by Mo Willems. He has a great way of creating books that interest first graders.
