Sensory spaces are specially designed areas that students with autism can use when they feel overwhelmed by the classroom environment. In these quiet spaces, students can work on sensory needs by engaging in sensory activities that calm or provide students with specific sensory input. A calming area is a quiet area of the room equipped with soothing materials and furnishings to help a student de-escalate and/or practice self-management when upset. With these two areas, our kids get the resources they need to help with their behavior, and having a sensory room and calming area gives them a safe place to collect themselves and work on self-regulating their behaviors.
