State reading scores are at an all-time low in terms of the average gain or growth. I have looked at our school data, and the average student is reading on a third grade level. This means most students are reading two grade levels beneath their current grade level. I believe that purchasing new books that interest the students will improve growth scores and close the learning gaps. As the school librarian, it is my hope and goal to help these students by providing current and age-appropriate material to match their interests. As a mom, teacher and person who loves to read, I know that if you have one person in your life who promotes reading and makes it fun, you are more likely to read daily. Reading is a life skill you will use every day. I want to be that one person who teaches my students that reading is a necessary skill that can also be entertaining.
