These materials will help aid students to communicate across school settings, in their home languages. It will allow teachers to model across settings, and figure out our students' wants and needs. The materials are "Core Vocabulary Boards". Core vocabulary is a set of basic words in any language that are used frequently and across contexts. 80% of what we say is communicated with only the 200 most basic words in our language (Baker & Hill, 2000). Some core vocabulary words are: help, more, want, open, go, stop, happy, and sad; among many more! The donations to this project will help us provide core boards in every language that is spoken at the William Monroe Trotter School. Some of these languages include: English, Spanish, Vietnamese, Haitian Creole, Somali, and Portuguese. By having core boards in every language spoken, we can give students and staff the support needed to implement a total communication approach throughout our school community.
