Dictionaries are not only an asset to understanding the meaning of unfamiliar words in independent reading, but also for assessments. Fifth and sixth graders are allowed to use a dictionary on any reading assessment. If students come to a word in a question, or a word in an answer choice that they do not know, they can look it up! They have become very resourceful in dictionary skills. In the beginning of the school year, students viewed looking up words as a tedious, time consuming task, but with practice, they now see how helpful they can be! Having more dictionaries available would make this task even easier for students.
