Soapstone carving is an absolute favorite project for my art students every year. The rhythmical carving and abstract thinking are characteristics of carving that they don't experience with two-dimensional art projects. Students will complete the carving, sanding, and polishing of their three-dimensional sculptures using soapstone. The final results will give each person a personal masterpiece! Each sculpture is made entirely by hand, like the great Michelangelo. The qualities of the soapstone create marble-like sculptures that are worthy of display. Students will experience subtractive sculpture and be proud of the results. It's not easy, but it is worth the extra effort.
