While my students are on the rug, we do various whole group activities like signing our morning songs to transition into our school day, practice phonemic awareness, and calendar math. Each student has their own space on the rug that is numbered, but some students could use some more structured visual and physical spacial reminders. Cube chairs are multipurpose pieces that can not only be used as a chair at different heights on the rug, but also a table, or a stool seat, giving my students flexible options to meet their varying needs. Using the cube chairs on the rug will help give students a sense of space and security as they have a clear physical reminder of their spot on the rug, and they don't have to anticipate classmates intruding into their defined space. When students feel safe and secure, they are open to receiving instruction presented. Students with disabilities can be easily overstimulated, and the increase in structure will aid in keeping them comfortable. These cube chairs can be flipped on the side for students to use as a table or as a backless stool for working with more flexibility. My young learners will feel empowered by the chance to choose an alternative seat while working in centers when the chairs won't be used to define student's space on the rug during circle time.
