My current curriculum is dominated by classic Science Fiction novels written 1930's, 1950's, and 1960's. All fabulous, groundbreaking novels, but definitely outdated in some areas. The handling of gender roles and technology always requires a little explaining as we read. Being able to update my library with more recent authors writing about more current ideas would be a true gift to my students. Red Mars is the first of a trilogy that follows a group of colonist as they settle and try to terraform the planet Mars. In the story, planet Earth has been beaten down by overpopulation and destruction of the climate. Not only is this story interesting, it is timely! It is foreshadowing some of the very real issues we are seeing unfold today.
