Our community is not very diverse at all. This field trip will give my students the chance to experience both Mexican and Spanish culture, including authentic food from both very diverse parts of the world.
Most of my students have not traveled outside of their region of northeastern Indiana, and therefore have not experienced a wide variety of cultures from other parts of the world. They will be able to compare and contrast culture (first-hand) that before they have only been able to read about and discuss in class.
None of the students in my upper-level Spanish classes have eaten at a Spanish restaurant before, so this will be a new experience for all of them. They will also be eating Mexican food for lunch that day, so they will be able to discuss how different the foods are from the different Spanish-speaking areas of the world.
