This trip would begin with a 2 hour charter bus ride to the beautiful Straits of Mackinac, complete with onboard TV and bathroom! From there, students will cross the longest suspension bridge between land in the Western Hemisphere, the Mackinac Bridge. Next, we will board the ferry bound for historic Mackinac Island. Upon arrival, we will be met by a horse drawn carriage and docent who will satisfy our curiosities with rich island history as we make our way to the Wings of Mackinac Butterfly Conservatory. Students will be up close and personal with many different butterfly species. Next stop, after viewing the wonders of the island’s geographical sites, such as Arch Rock and a variety of plant and animal species, is Fort Mackinac. Here, students will see history come to life as they watch re-enactments of military training and battles, and learn about life inside the fort. Students will tour the oldest building in Michigan to learn more about what life was like during the 19th Century. After the fort tour, students will have the opportunity to step back in time and enjoy shopping in historic downtown Mackinac Island. They will be able to watch how the islanders make their famous fudge and other delicious confectionery treats. The day will conclude with a ferry trip back to the mainland, but not without a quick ride under the famous Mackinac Bridge to offer a once in a lifetime view from below the bridge. Students will investigate the development of Michigan’s major economics from statehood to present, learn how migration and immigration effected and continues to effect the growth of Michigan, and compare life of people in Michigan from 1837 to the present.
