As I take on my new position as a school social worker with a heavy focus on the social-emotional needs of our students, I want to be able to provide them with a safe, comfortable, and inviting space. With that being said, my current office is none of the above. I will be working with a very diverse population of students ranging from 7th-12th grade. I want my office to be known as a place where students feel comfortable to come as they are. My goal is to let them be themselves and reflect on the type of person they want to become. I want my school social work office to be a safe space and a refuge for students to come to when they are experiencing strong emotions, family conflicts, or uncertainties. Many of my students crave familiarity and consistency, especially if they are lacking it in other aspects of their lives. I want this space to be comfortable and inviting so they can be themselves while we work through the personal struggles they are facing. I think by adding mood lighting can create a cozy wellness space for my students to enjoy! I also have confidential files and things I want to keep under lock and key. So the locked filing cabinet would help with that.
