Clip-on tuners that read the vibrations of the instrument have been THE answer for tuning quickly and independently! We started using them in past years as our Orchestra program grew so much that we were moved outside the school, to a portable classroom. The space has a low ceiling and the sounds can be difficult to differentiate. I found that I loved having each student able to tune independently, even as beginners. It enabled me to take care of the problems that delay a class, and our rehearsal time became much more efficiently used! This year of Covid-19 precautions has made it so we can no longer get by with sharing a classroom set of tuners. As we prepare students for the probability of long term online learning, it will be most advantageous for students to use clip-on tuners at home, both for instant feedback on pitch accuracy during daily practice and for keeping their instruments functioning. My goal is to give my students a set-up that will keep them playing! Just the process of learning to play an instrument or a new song builds emotional strength and resilience. Playing in orchestras has brought me joy throughout my entire life, ever since my own days in junior high orchestra!
