These \"small\" books are making a big impact by giving us opportunities to explore themes, practice summarizing, analyze illustrations alongside text, and connect to complex ideas in a way that feels approachable and engaging. Reading in our classroom now looks more interactive and joyful. Students huddle around books in small groups, discussing the themes they see, comparing how text and illustrations work together, and even making connections between picture books and the novels we are reading. It's incredible to see them discover that picture books are not just for kids—they are rich with lessons, emotions, and ideas that resonate with middle schoolers, too.","fullyFundedDate":1755713588111,"projectUrl":"project/small-books-big-impact-picture-books-i/9365643/","projectTitle":"Small Books, Big Impact: Picture Books in ELA","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Pentecost","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9973139_orig.png?crop=1206,1205,x0,y623&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742915450762","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9973139"},{"teacherId":8919890,"projectId":9128766,"letterContent":"Many of our English Language Learner (ELL) students are working hard to improve their listening and speaking skills in English. Headphones are a very important tool in helping them grow.\r\n\r\nWith headphones, students can practice listening to English without distractions. They can hear stories, questions, and conversations clearly. This helps them understand the language better and feel more confident.\r\n\r\nHeadphones also help students practice speaking. Some of our students use special programs to record their voices and practice pronunciation. This is especially helpful as they prepare for the WIDA test, which checks how well they listen, speak, read, and write in English.\r\n\r\nDuring the WIDA exam, students use headphones and microphones to listen carefully and respond clearly. Having good-quality headphones helps them do their best.\r\n\r\nThank you for supporting our students! My students were so excited when they first saw the new materials—many of them immediately picked up a book and started reading! The book slings have helped us organize our Spanish-language stories, allowing the students to access their favorite books more easily. They've been using the books for both independent reading and as part of a classroom project where they create their own stories in Spanish. The enthusiasm and engagement have been inspiring!\r\n\r\nNext, we will continue to explore these books and dive deeper into storytelling and reading comprehension activities. Reynolds' relatable writing style and authentic dialogue can captivate students, encouraging them to develop a love for reading while improving their comprehension skills. The series' fast-paced storytelling and diverse characters provide ELL students with meaningful connections to themes of perseverance, friendship, and self-discovery, making the reading experience both enjoyable and relevant. Additionally, exposure to conversational and academic vocabulary within the books can support students' language acquisition, reinforcing grammar, syntax, and context through engaging narratives. The series also offers opportunities for class discussions, writing assignments, and projects that allow students to express their thoughts and opinions, further developing their language skills. Furthermore, the diverse cultural representation in the Track series can help ELL students feel seen and validated, fostering a sense of belonging and boosting their confidence in using English in both academic and social settings. Ultimately, having access to high-interest literature like the Track series can create a more inclusive and dynamic learning environment, where students are inspired to engage with language in meaningful ways.","fullyFundedDate":1736961217815,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-set-track-series/9027335/","projectTitle":"Classroom Set: Track Series","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. P Hegstrom","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8919890_orig.jpg?crop=1277,1277,x0,y289&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1692632800311","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/misshegstrom"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_61420","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1195,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":20,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":82,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":12,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 9","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":63.7,"schoolId":61420,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Rocky Mountain Junior High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Rocky Mountain Junior High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/utah/weber-school-district/rocky-mountain-junior-high-school/61420"}
