Fluency is a a fundamental pillar in becoming a strong reader. With a large number of students who are reading below grade level, I want them to have daily practice with listening to and producing fluent reading. While we have access to iPads that can allow them to listen to books, without headphones, students aren't able to practice this listening in a targeted way. Providing each of my students with a set of headphones will change the way they receive targeted listening practice as readers. These headsets will not only allow students to listen to fluent reading, they will also let them record themselves as readers - offering opportunities for metacognition and ownership of their learning and growth. It matters deeply that students share their learning in beautifully executed ways, and one of those ways is by literally allowing them to share their voices. The headsets with microphone technology will offer my students the chance to use their own voices to share their learning with the community and world around them.
