All of my students greatly benefit from being active throughout the day. They also like to take control of their own learning and enjoy having the ability to choose their own seating. Some enjoy sitting facing the windows, the view and natural light seem to work well for them. Some enjoy sitting on the floor, while others enjoy standing while doing their work. Some children prefer working alone, while others prefer working in groups. Produce quality work, while being successful and comfortable! Those are my rules for flexible seating. I allow my students to choose their seating for each lesson throughout the day. As long as they are working hard, where they are working shouldn’t matter. Currently, we have individual desks grouped as tables. The desks are wobbly, uneven and different heights. The students complain about the desks often and would love the ability to sit at a sturdy table. I have purchased some seating options with my own money this year, including beach chairs and rocking chairs. Students have expressed the desire to stand while they work. Bending over a small desk is not conducive to producing quality work, the standing desks are a great way to solve that problem.
