Our new Superintendent has challenged teachers to create a “book-rich” environment in every classroom. Book access is a significant factor in literacy development. Research shows that students in classrooms with high-quality classroom libraries read 50 percent more than students who do not have access to a library in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to be “choosy” about the books in a classroom library and to avoid purchasing every outdated and dog-eared book from yard sales. Students need to get excited about the books in the classroom library. I'm requesting Newbery Classroom Library Builder, Caldecott Classroom Library Builder, and Classroom Library Must-Haves book sets. Having a high-quality classroom library will allow me to present and display books in enticing ways that encourage and prompt interest, dialogue, and thinking. With a growing classroom library, the buzz about books in our classroom will bloom!
