Our school, like many, has limited funding for arts, so these supplies will allow students to use various colors of paints and paper to create papier mache masks that emulate ones they see and study on our trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We view the masks of various groups from Asia, Africa and Mexico, so these often allow students to study aspects of the history and story of their own heritage cultures, or can offer a window into others' cultures. In this hands-on, get-messy project, kids get out of their comfort zones and into the real work of creating unique art! We spend a day at the museum and then two to four days sculpting. In my past experiences doing this "Intensive", I saw kids who often seem disengaged in traditional reading and writing projects, thrive and come to life while creating something three-dimensional.
