My students face a number of social, emotional and cognitive challenges every day that many of us will never have to experience. They are very resilient and determined. My students come to school every day eager to learn. They are a group of sweet, kind, caring, fun and appreciative individuals. They are the type of students that will forever leave an impact in your life. I teach in a specialized high school in the South Bronx, where all the students have special needs. Our school is located in a high poverty area in the Bronx. I teach in a self-contained classroom that consists of six students who are classified with an autism spectrum disorder. They are on different learning levels and require a lot of support in terms of their ability to reach their functional academic goals, as well as goals in social skills that allow them to succeed in real life situations at school, home and in the community.
