Many students in our inner-city school are at least 1-2 years behind grade level returning to school post-lockdown. It is critical that the students in Kindergarten- 2nd grade have access to books at their appropriate level so that they can develop their literacy skills. The books will be used in a small group focusing on meaning, structure and visual information of the text. The goal is to move the students though the various levels and develop their decoding, fluency and comprehension skills in the process. Since, we have so few guided reading books at our school, the students will not be able to take them home. But, they will be provided "book baggies" so as to reread and practice on the familiar book in their classroom. As they say, "practice makes perfect!"
