Because our students not only face equity gaps in the core subjects but also in overall physical fitness data as well, there is heavy responsibility on the shoulders of our teachers to help close these gaps by providing the high-quality education and emotional support our students deserve as well as setting the high expectations we know our students can reach and then meeting students where they’re at in order to help them reach those high expectations. To address the unique needs of these students which stem from the distinctive challenges they face, there are several strategies/approaches which I’ve both learned & discovered have a positive impact on their ability to learn and be successful. I am always seeking new and better ways to reach these youth that are so near and dear to my heart and to provide them will tools that will better equip them to be successful. One of the most powerful tools that I believe we can provide for our students is the practices and skills learned in mindfulness, meditation, and yoga. In order for students to help manage, work through, understand and process their own thoughts and emotions and how those are directly tied to their body, mind & spirit, the techniques and skills learned through yoga and mindfulness are invaluable. With special focus on providing helpful and healing tools for my students whose lives have been severely impacted by trauma/ACE’s, I believe that undergoing the Breathe for Change 200-hour training would have a positive impact on my life as well as the lives of my students and families, and thus have a ripple effect on our future as a more healthy, balanced and mindful community.
