Students will gain proficiency in vertical gardening and composting by utilizing the composting bin and planters. This will allow students in any type of home to gain the knowledge and skills to produce and maintain small vegetable gardens. I also hope to be able to produce enough food from this garden to send home to those students in need. Home gardening helps tie in the carbon and nitrogen cycles that students learn about to real world skills that will enable greater food security, especially in lower income households. Because vegetables are often more costly than less nutrient dense food, I hope that this project will enable students to build the confidence and knowledge needed to maintain a productive home garden, regardless of access to a yard.
