A class set of Sing, Unburied, Sing--a beautiful text that includes rich character development and thematic connections--will add to our growing collection of titles used for student choice, book club structure, and the development of effective literary communities within our school--particularly with my ninth graders. This text will serve as a supplement to our study of Catcher in the Rye, which includes a variety of writing activities and text-to-text comparisons within an ongoing Writer's Notebook, Socratic Seminar, and analysis of author's style choices. Most of my current students are highly motivated and energized by reading, but even for those who are more reluctant readers, it is important that I continue to offer a wide range of texts and experiences for them. I want my students to be empowered by exploration of experience and worldview that novels such as Sing, Unburied, Sing can offer. As my students continue to develop positive habits as critical readers, my hope is that they use these experiences as a springboard for further growth, maturity, and self-reflection.
