This is my first year teaching and each time we get to a new topic, I think about how much better it would be with a hands-on experience. I have made a few, but the time it takes to make them, takes away from the time that I can spend helping my students and planning for them. My students would greatly benefit from the materials, as well as the time it would give back to me. Math manipulatives foster an environment of cooperation and exploration and help students learn how to problem solve. Rather than a one manipulative for me to demonstrate, my goal is to get enough for the whole class so they can each experiment on their own or in small groups. Students who do not normally enjoy math, find it more accessible to them when they can manipulate things with their hands and visualize concepts. By using math manipulatives, students can discover math concepts, helping them to develop critical thinking skills.
