I am in my second year teaching Kindergarten and believe that technology can enhance the hands-on learning we do in the classroom. Not only does technology help students develop 21st Century Skills, but it has proven to be effective during the school closure we experienced last spring. Since my students are not permitted to share books this school year due to COVID, I had to seal off my classroom library. Removing these beloved books from the hands of my students is heart-breaking. My Kindergartners would benefit from having iPads so they can easily login and access digital books to help them practice their reading skills and develop valuable 21st Century Skills such as the use of technology for learning. Additionally, there is the risk that we could end up moving from in-person instruction to distance learning if an outbreak happens, as we did last school year. In that case, students would be able to check out the iPads so that learning could continue at home. There is a myth surrounding Title I schools like mine - that we have all the technology we need. We all know that is not true! Funding often gets funneled to other areas of our school; and the funding we do receive is not sufficient to close the achievement gap. In my classroom, there is only enough technology for less than 25% of the class to have access. Please help me make a difference for my Kindergartners during this pandemic and in the years to come!
