Many children who live with anxiety and have experienced trauma during the critical stages of brain development live with a misunderstood urge to escape. This escape can look like hyperactivity and often defiance. Our students sometimes satisfy this need by running out of the classroom. We cannot turn away the need of a young person because the development of the skill to cope alone was interrupted by unforeseen circumstance. It is our job as civilians to support the feeling of safety and comfort for each other. The materials requested will fill a safe space in our school that will satisfy this need to move, to escape, in a predictable way. Our support staff will proactively accompany the students who identify with having a need for an active sensory space. Rather than leave their class unexpectedly and alone, which is unsafe, they will be escorted to this room filled with the active sensory activities listed below. These activities include balance, climbing, and focused movement and will interrupt their mistaken idea that they are on their own to meet their needs to move throughout their academic day. This sensory space will encourage our scholars that they belong in our community regardless of their unique needs.
