Each and every child deserves to have access to books according to their reading levels. Every parent and educator know that Reading is an integral part of academic learning. About 80% of my students qualify for free and reduced lunch, and overall, the school has 88% of families coming from low-income households. I have the primary responsibility in the classroom of making sure that our young second graders are having actual experiences of having a balanced literacy . That they enjoy reading books that interest them everyday. My passion for teaching requires me to advocate for my low income students who unfortunately have limited access to books. Correlated to this, they also need a private space where to sit on during reading mini lessons and other instruction. It fosters a collaborative and respectful environment and easier management as students turn and talk during discussions on the squared rug. This helps ensure a safe space for students when they are seated crisscrossed in their own private squares.
