Students love reading books they can understand! They enjoy grabbing their Read to Self baggie, find a bean bag, slouch into it, and read! Some stretch out on the carpet for a good read. While other students will read with a friend and quiz each other with "wh" questions. It is wonderful to see them read! Students exchange books weekly from the classroom library. It would be great to add leveled material that is just-right for each reader. Reading just right books will empower students to be successful and confident readers! The variety of leveled books will help reach the targeted levels for H, I, and J. This is the majority of the current readers in the second-grade classroom. It will also benefit the students rising to these levels for middle of the year achievement. Students will also increase their reading stamina which in return helps them stay focused on the plot for better comprehension. I currently use Spanish leveled titles purchased by the school for reading interventions although students can not select for independent reading material from these titles. As students hear their guided reading group called, they instantly stop their center work, and make a quick dash to the reading table. Students immediately start to analyze the leveled title, take a picture walk, and begin to ask questions about the topic. As we dive into the book together, students make connections and make inferences. There interactions demonstrate their enjoyment to read! If the students can select leveled books to read independently, they are more likely to continue to read for pleasure while making growth on the reading sale. The students will definitely prevail with this project!
