My current bookshelf contains many books passed to me by other teachers; but few feature diversity in skin color, orientation, ability, family style, or religion. My students are diverse in all of these way and deserve to see literature that reflects this. As young children with emotional and behavioral difficulties, books are also the best way to teach crucial social emotional skills. The addition of these books to my class library will help my students see themselves reflected in literature as well as helping them meet their reading and behavioral goals. I plan on using these books for weekly read alouds with corresponding lessons and projects about diversity as well as social emotional skills.
