The sensory hallways will be one more important tool for teachers and therapists to use in helping students achieve their full potential by supporting focused and regular classroom participation. Students can come out into the hallway and do five jumping jacks or take five deep breaths, and start to learn how to regulate and learn what’s going on. The teacher will suggest students go to the sensory hallways when noticing a student needs a break. For example, when students are fidgeting, unfocused or having trouble sitting still in class, teachers can send them out to a "sensory hallway" and through the path, which will take less than two minutes. The idea is that youngsters will burn some energy and return ready This proprioceptive and vestibular input can help all students increase cognition and retention of new information, so teachers can incorporate the pathways into their lesson plans to help with learning shapes, colors, spelling, and math. As Kevin Thomas, a school principal said, “The paths can be used for students with specific sensory needs or for overall academic reinforcement. Studies have shown that movement can help reinforce a lesson; for example, teachers can ask students to spell a sight word when stepping on an orange circle or skip count when they land on a single tiger paw. ESL teachers are even using the paths to help their students with English language acquisition.” Teachers, paraprofessionals, students, and occupational therapists will work on the pathways. The paths will be designed based on age-appropriate movement that students can handle: stepping, walking, hopping, and so on; but the goal is to also make them fun, something that students want to do.
