As an education specialist, I like to utilize both whole group learning and small group direct instruction to address student IEP goals. Whole group lessons create a sense of community in our classroom and give students the chance to shine in front of their peers. A very important component for all students but students with special education services especially is creating a routine and providing structure in the classroom. This allows students to learn the norms of a community space including being on time, personal space, and what is expected of the work we do. While a rainbow rug may seem like a small part of that, it gives students a personalized space in our classroom to engage while also providing structure so students can focus on the tasks that are given to them. Additionally, I love my room to be filled with color, not so much to overstimulate but to provide a warm and welcome space for learning. A little bit goes a long way!
