A classroom transformation is where you add items to your room to turn it into a new learning space and experience. Classroom transformations are an exciting way to engage students in their learning by allowing them to feel like they have been "transported" into different real world environments. The gift card will be used to purchase some of the amazing pre-made transformation bundles offered on Teacher's Pay Teachers that include challenges that cover rigorous and high- level content based on the 2nd grade standards for math and reading. Tougher state standards have placed increasing demands on children's prior knowledge. The materials requested will provide an immersive experience for all students that will enhance their knowledge base and increase their learning and engagement in our math and reading topics. Transformations maximize instructional time while maintaining optimal learning conditions. For example, my first transformation was based on space. I hung solar system backdrops around the room and gave each student an astronaut mask. Students had to visit each "planet, the sun, and the moon" to complete a math challenge in which they had to apply the concepts and skills taught throughout the unit. The students loved it and retained their learning due to the concrete real life connections they were able to make during the transformation. That one transformation resulted in an increase of content retention among the students and a 20% increase in proficiency on the end of unit math assessment! The acquired transformation materials and supplies, will ensure that ALL of my 2nd grade students will be able to experience new, enriching learning adventures that will lead to extended retention and a life long love of learning.
