Novel studies allow students to read "real" stories instead of basal stories. It all starts with the opportunity to read engaging texts. It is human nature to love a good story. The novel studies I do with my fourth graders engage the reading . It got them excited and engaged in deep thinking about reading comprehension strategies as well as lively discussions and debates!! I overheard a discussion on point of view. And I even watched students discuss and support their inferences. A sense of community and scholarly inclusion is created when students laugh, gasp, and weep in unison while reading the same engrossing grade-level novel.
