I am a big proponent of retrieval practice in order to help my students retain information and make connections, which is important since they are freshman taking an AP exam. Geography can sometimes be so conceptual that I have found asking students to creatively depict and explain concepts and models using LEGOs, Play-Doh, and chalk markers to draw on the table, are a perfect way for students to demonstrate knowledge using multiple modalities and keeps them engaged with the material. In addition, since we cover so much material in preparation for the AP Test and research shows the value of visual learning, it is imperative that my students have access to markers, colored pencils, staplers, and tape for collaborative posters and projects, which I can hang from the ceiling using the ceiling hooks. The large whiteboard posters and markers will allow me to set up stations around the room and are more economical than using easel paper. Similarly the dry-erase pocket sheet protectors will allow my students to annotate maps and previously released Free Response Questions to prepare for the AP Exam, where they will use the blue pens as preferred by the exam graders. Finally, this year I was moved into a new classroom. I want to generate a comfortable space for my students to get creative and feel inspired. I have 4 more windows than I previously had in my old classroom and while the natural light is amazing, curtains will make it feel more like a home than a sterile classroom, as will the string lights, which the students actually requested. Since my classroom is too small for flexible seating, we use cushy yoga mats so that students can spread out without having to sit on hard tile floors. They requested more of those as well!
