The Outsiders is a great book that I like to use to expressly show how everyone is different in class, how friendships are valuable, and that life is too short to waste it on things that aren't important. The novel is valuable to my students education because it builds vocabulary and shows them that there were still problems similar to current issues they may face today. This is an opportunity to discuss how they handled conflicts then and how they handle them today. They can decide which is more appropriate or if they could handle conflicts a completely new way that may be better.
