We are requesting books by Black authors with Black protagonists to help decolonize the classroom library. It is so important for readers, especially young readers, to be able to see themselves in literature, but too often we have libraries full of books by White authors with White protagonists. Every time a student completes an assessment early in my class, they are expected to read a book, but many don't carry a book around with them. Adding these books to my classroom library will give my students the opportunity to read narratives with powerful, Black voices. Far from the typical world of Tom Sawyer or To Kill A Mockingbird, these books are invaluable to Black, White, and Latinx students in removing implicit biases.
